This scholarly study of the career of influential German sculptor Multscher (ca. 1400-1467) documents with illustrations and individual commentaries some 50 sculptures and reliefs produced by the artist, his Ulm workshop, and his contemporaries and followers, the selection illuminating the expressive naturalism of his style and its impact on 15th-century Swabian art. Nine essays discuss Multscher's life, the stages of his artistic development, his stylistic sources and the question of his status as a painter.
