OP THE PAINTINGS OF SYLVIA PLIMACK MANGOLD. Cheryl Brutvan. Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, 1994. Published in association with Hudson Hills Press, Inc., New York. 142 pp. with 96 ills. (61 col.). 27 x 26 cm. LC 93-41205 ISBN 1555951031 In English.
Illuminating the oeuvre of an American artist whose images reflect an unusual synthesis of realist, minimalist and conceptual concerns, this catalogue presents fine full-page reproductions of 60 paintings executed by Mangold (b. 1938) from 1967 to 1994, including hyperrealistic studies of bare wood floors, atmospheric landscapes framed by illusionistically rendered strips of masking tape, and lyrical "portraits" of trees. A substantial critical overview of the formal and thematic issues addressed in Mangold's paintings is amplified by a selection of writings from her notebooks.
