Focused on a period of intense artistic and psychological turmoil in the career of renowned German Expressionist Kirchner (1880-1938), this catalogue documents 32 paintings and ten drawings created by the artist from 1910 to 1919 along with many woodcuts, etchings and lithographs once held in the collection of Botho Graef, a Jena art historian who was one of Kirchner's strong supporters during his years of crisis. Presents fine illustrations and individual examinations of many of the featured pieces, five scholarly essays analyzing Kirchner's output of the mid-1910s and his personal and artistic links to Graef and other figures, and an anthology of reprinted texts that includes reviews of exhibitions of Kirchner's work mounted in Jena from 1914 to 1920.
