Extensively reviewing the oeuvre of celebrated French painter Puvis de Chavannes (1824-1898), a leading Symbolist best known for his monumental murals on Arcadian themes, this catalogue documents some 55 easel paintings and nearly 90 drawings produced by the artist between 1850 and 1897, including figure studies, portraits and allegorical and religious tableaux executed in a style based on radically simplified forms and muted shading. Excellent reproductions and individual examinations of the exhibited works (which include a small selection of pieces by Gauguin, Denis and other artists strongly influenced by Puvis) are prefaced by four scholarly essays, among them discussions of the evolution and significance of Puvis's innovative decorative style, the role of drawing in his work, and his status within the artistic establishment of late 19th-century France.
