STILL WORKING: UNDERKNOWN ARTISTS OF AGE IN AMERICA. Ed. by Stuart Shedletsky. Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., 1994. Organized by Parsons School of Design, New School for Social Research, New York. Published in association with University of Washington Press, Seattle. 208 pp. with 53 ills. (32 col.) and 49 photos of the artists. 28 x 22 cm. LC 94-67236 ISBN 0295973854 In English.
Accompanying an unusual exhibition organized to celebrate the achievements of 32 artists whose long careers have been spent in relative obscurity, this catalogue highlights a stylistically varied selection of recent paintings, sculptures, reliefs and drawings produced by Carl Morris, Hans Burkhardt, Claire Falkenstein, Robert Barnes, Don Baum and other American artists born before 1935. Full-page reproductions of the featured pieces along with statements by and brief profiles of the artists precede five essays that include an examination of the impact of fluctuating critical trends and market forces on artistic careers, a discussion of the cultural biases and myths that contribute to the neglect of older contemporary artists in the United States, and a text challenging the concept of an "old age style."
