Extensively reviewing the oeuvre of Munich painter Leibl (1844-1900), a leading proponent of realism in late 19th-century German art, this substantial catalogue features excellent reproductions and individual descriptions of some 90 paintings and more than 100 drawings, preparatory sketches and prints by the artist, among them many luminous, naturalistic portraits of both aristocrats and peasants that reflect in particular the influence of Courbet. Ten scholarly essays examining Leibl's life and independent career include discussions of his painting techniques, his draughtsmanship, his critical reception in Germany and France, and his strong links to the traditions of 17th-century Dutch art.
