HANS HAACKE: BODENLOS (Hans Haacke: Bottomless). Ed. by Klaus Bussmann and Florian Matzner. Deutscher Pavillon, Giardini di Castello, Venice, 1993. XLV Esposizione Internazionale d'Arte La Biennale di Venezia. Published by Edition Cantz, Stuttgart. 140 pp. with 123 ills. (53 col.). 29 x 23 cm. LC 94-150354 ISBN 3893225573 Bilingual in German and English (biographical chronology and some captions in German only; some captions in English only).
While showcasing Haacke's contribution to the 1993 Venice Biennale -- an installation for which the stone floor of the Nazi-era German pavilion was demolished -- this catalogue also documents 18 sculptural objects, public projects and other pieces produced from 1989 to 1993 by the well-known German-born artist (b. 1936), many of which embody controversial statements on political and cultural issues. Two essays that discuss the history of the German pavilion and examine Haacke's subversive explorations of corporate and political influence in the art world are augmented by the artist's commentaries on the featured works and a text in which he critiques German exhibitions mounted at the Biennale during the Third Reich.
