Last available copy is slightly shelf worn with sticker affixed to book jacket; otherwise in very good condition with tight binding. Charting the development of the illustrated book as an important vehicle of artistic expression from the 1890s to the present, this substantial catalogue features pictorial documentation of more than 150 volumes published in limited or open editions, including books illustrated (and often written) by such major figures as Gauguin, Bonnard, Picasso, Matisse, Dali, Ernst, Chagall, Dubuffet, Johns, Tapies, Beuys and Rauschenberg. Brief commentaries on the exhibited works (drawn largely from the Museum's collection) supplement a lengthy essay that thoroughly examines the evolution of the modern artist's book, discussing the complex collaborative relationships established by visual artists, authors and publishers, surveying the literary and political themes common to many of the works, and evaluating the artistic constraints imposed by the materials and techniques of book production.
