The first substantial study of the oeuvre of British Romantic painter Holst, a pupil of Fuseli whose works were greatly admired by Rossetti and other Pre-Raphaelites, this catalogue presents 14 oils, 45 drawings and a selection of prints and book illustrations by the artist that include brooding portraits, sensuous figure studies and many depictions of scenes from the writings of Goethe, Dante and other authors. Brief commentaries on most of the exhibited pieces augment a lengthy examination of Holst's life and work illustrated with numerous additional compositions by the artist.
