Showcasing works by a French artist who achieved renown as an animal sculptor in the early 20th century, this volume features excellent reproductions of stylized bronze studies of birds, bears and other creatures produced by Pompon primarily during the 1920s while also presenting illustrated catalogues raisonnes of his animal pieces and of the figure sculptures he executed during his early career and his years as an assistant to Rodin and other sculptors. Two essays examine the intermingling of traditional and modernist elements in Pompon's style, discussing his connections to Barye and 19th-century sculpture and situating his oeuvre in relation to the works of Brancusi and other avant-garde artists of the 20th century.
