A scholarly review of Cassiers's achievements as a draughtsman and graphic designer, this catalogue features fine reproductions of the posters and other commercial designs for which the Belgian artist is best known while also presenting numerous watercolors and drawings that include landscapes, architectural studies and depictions of daily life in the coastal communities of the Low Countries. Eight essays discuss the role of Dutch and Belgian themes in Cassiers's oeuvre, his stylistic evolution as a watercolorist, the idealized images of women and the working class presented in his works, and the international success of the posters he designed for the Red Star shipping line and other firms.
