Surveying the history of photographic self-portraiture through the presentation of works from a private collection recently donated to the Museum, this catalogue showcases 135 stylistically diverse images produced from the 1850s through the 1980s by 130 international photographers, including such figures as Nadar, Muybridge, Stieglitz, Steichen, Cunningham, Weston, Kertesz, Outerbridge, Arbus, Brandt, Friedlander, Mapplethorpe, Saudek and Burson. Full-page reproductions of the exhibited photographs and biographical profiles of the artists are prefaced by two essays detailing the formation of the Irmas collection and exploring the psychological and artistic significance of the self-portrait.
