Showcasing 63 late 19th- and early 20th-century images of the Mediterranean coastal village of l'Estaque and exploring the new visions of landscape they embodied, this catalogue features fine reproductions of influential views of the region produced by Cezanne from 1869 to 1895, Fauvist canvases by Braque and Derain created during their sojourns in the town from 1905 to 1907, and seminal Cubist landscapes executed in l'Estaque by Braque and Dufy in 1908. Accompanied by illustrations of many related works by the featured figures and other artists, eight essays include William Rubin's lengthy 1977 examination of Cezanne's impact on the rise of Cubism (first published in Cezanne: The Late Work, Worldwide 13557), an analysis of the modern concepts of landscape developed at l'Estaque, and discussions of significant paintings produced by Braque, Dufy and Derain during their visits to the village.
