OP CHUCK CLOSE. Ed. by Jochen Poetter and Helmut Friedel. Staatliche Kunsthalle, Baden-Baden, 1994. Organized in association with Stadtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus, Munich. Distributed by Cantz Verlag, Ostfildern. 200 pp. with 82 ills. (46 col.). 32 x 26 cm. LC 95-202681 ISBN 3893226133 Bilingual in German and English (biographical chronology in English only, some captions in English or German only).
Providing a fine critical and pictorial overview of Close's career, this catalogue features excellent full-page reproductions of 28 paintings and mixed-media canvases and eleven photographic compositions produced by the prominent American artist (b. 1940) from 1967 to 1993, including many of the monumental photorealist portraits for which he is best known. Four substantial essays discuss in detail Close's working methods, his stylistic progression from hyperrealism toward abstraction, the distinctive optical characteristics of his oeuvre, and the psychological detachment underlying his approach to portraiture.
