R.B. KITAJ. Ed. by Richard Morphet. Tate Gallery, London, 1994. Published in the U.S.A. by Rizzoli International Publications, Inc., New York. 240 pp. with 203 ills. (116 col.). 31 x 24 cm. LC 94-5321 ISBN 0847818462 In English.
Extensively reviewing Kitaj's distinctive figurative oeuvre, this catalogue presents nearly 80 paintings and mixed-media canvases and some 35 drawings executed by the celebrated London-based American artist (b. 1932) from 1958 to 1994, including portraits and figure studies as well as numerous enigmatic narrative compositions that feature expressive distortions of the human form and frequent literary and art historical allusions. Excellent reproductions of the exhibited works (many accompanied by the artist's commentaries) and a detailed biographical chronology are prefaced by a lengthy critical overview of Kitaj's career, a discussion of his achievements in the context of modernist traditions, and a substantial interview with the painter.
