ARTHUR BOYD: RETROSPECTIVE. Barry Pearce et al. Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney, 1993. Published in association with Beagle Press, Roseville. 200 pp. with 213 ills. (174 col.). 33 x 26 cm. ISBN 0947349081 In English.
A detailed examination of the oeuvre of a major postwar Australian painter whose frequently visionary images reflect the influence of Bruegel, Bosch, Picasso and Chagall, this catalogue features outstanding color reproductions of 136 paintings executed by Boyd (b. 1920) from 1936 to 1990 while also illustrating some 40 drawings and prints and ten ceramic pieces by the artist, the selection encompassing early and late landscapes, psychologically charged renderings of biblical and mythological subjects, and expressionistic compositions exploring themes of alienation, sexual passion and death. A substantial critical overview of Boyd's long career in Australia and Great Britain is augmented by separate discussions of his ceramics and his graphic works.
