OP EVA HESSE: DRAWING IN SPACE -- BILDER UND RELIEFS {(Pictures and Reliefs)}. Ulmer Museum, Ulm, 1994. Published in association with Cantz Verlag, Ostfildern. 190 pp. with 108 ills. (53 col.). 31 x 24 cm. LC 94-234961 ISBN 3893226370 Bilingual in German and English.
Thoroughly reviewing the early career of a prominent American artist best known for the distinctive sculptures she created during the last years of her life, this catalogue presents fine reproductions of 17 paintings, 38 works on paper and five reliefs produced by Hesse (1936-1970) from 1959 to 1965, among them expressive figurative and biomorphic abstractions, loosely rendered grid compositions, depictions of fantastic mechanical forms, and wall-mounted sculptural pieces featuring protruding cords and wires. Three critical essays analyzing the evolution of Hesse's artistic vocabulary from 1960 to 1965 and the relationship of her paintings and drawings to her later sculptures are augmented by an illuminating interview with Conceptual artist Mel Bochner and a chronology of Hesse's prolific sojourn in Germany (1964-65) that incorporates numerous excerpts from her diaries.
