Presenting a major reappraisal of the psychologically charged oeuvre of celebrated French artist Redon, an individualistic but influential figure in the Symbolist movement of the late 19th century, this catalogue thoroughly documents an exhibition of more than 50 paintings and some 125 pastels, drawings and prints, including many of the atmospheric lithographs and charcoal drawings of fantastic figures, disembodied heads and dream-like landscapes that dominated the artist's work from the 1860s through the 1880s as well as vibrantly hued floral still lifes, portraits and mythological scenes from the last decades of his career. Reproductions of the exhibited works and of hundreds of additional compositions by Redon and others accompany twelve lengthy texts that draw on newly accessible archival material in their detailed examinations of successive phases in the evolution of the artist's oeuvre, including discussions of the personal and spiritual foundations of his vision, his involvement in the illustration of Symbolist texts, his exploration of new techniques and materials, and his relationship to the turn-of-the-century art market in France.
