Thoroughly surveys the oeuvre of noted documentary photographer Lange (1895-1965) through a presentation of 123 works produced from 1933 to 1957, featuring many of her well-known portraits of Depression-era farmers and migrants as well as studies of Japanese Americans relocated during World War II and images of postwar urban society. Three essays include a substantial critical overview of Lange's career in Northern California and her activities as a Farm Security Administration photographer, a discussion of the political and aesthetic concerns informing her documentary approach, and a detailed account of her collaborative work with her husband, agricultural economist Paul Taylor.
