Presenting an array of more than 120 diverse essays, this scholarly two-volume catalogue extensively examines the influence of totalitarian regimes on artistic and architectural developments in Austria, Germany, Italy and the Soviet Union during the first half of the 20th century. Illustrations of hundreds of propagandistic paintings, sculptures and other art works and of numerous monumental building projects promoted by Hitler, Mussolini and Stalin accompany discussions of topics ranging from the role of artists in creating images of heroic nationalism and the relationship between Fascism and Rationalist architecture to the history of the decorative porcelain manufactory established by the Nazis in the Dachau concentration camp.
