Thoroughly reviewing the career and oeuvre of celebrated Austrian-born painter and photographer Hausmann (1886-1971), a leading member of the Berlin Dada group and an originator of the photomontage, this catalogue features reproductions of nearly 120 drawings, collages, paintings and other works dating from 1912 to 1970 and of some 100 photographs that include portraits, nudes, architectural studies and abstract photograms. Augmented by a substantial anthology of Hausmann's theoretical writings, six essays examine such topics as the philosophical and psychological theories that influenced his early development, his close working relationship with Berlin Dadaist Johannes Baader, his achievements as a photographer, and the concept of language informing his enigmatic sound poems. Please note that a German-language edition of this title is currently available (see Worldwide 900481).
