Highlighting a prominent theme in the oeuvre of an American painter and illustrator who spent most of his life in England, this catalogue presents a selection of drawings and paintings of scenes from Shakespeare's plays executed by Abbey (1852-1911) from 1888 to 1909, many of the works reflecting the artist's interest in the Pre-Raphaelite movement. Reproductions of the featured pieces and of related compositions by other 19th-century artists accompany a six-part text that examines in detail Abbey's treatment of Shakespearean subjects, discussing his numerous illustrations for Harper's Monthly, his costume designs for Henry Irving's Richard II and the large-scale canvases he exhibited at the Royal Academy in the late 1890s.
