An intensive study of Dali's personal and artistic development from his childhood years through his departure from Spain in the late 1920s, this well-illustrated catalogue documents an exhibition of some 60 paintings and 65 drawings produced from 1916 to 1931 by the renowned Catalan artist (1904-1989), including a stylistically eclectic selection of early portraits and figure studies along with numerous examples of the dramatic hallucinatory images that established Dali as a key figure among the Surrealists in Paris. A detailed chronology of the artist's early life and career and an anthology of his diverse writings of the period augment five essays examining the familial, artistic and literary influences on Dali's development during his years in Catalonia and Madrid, the aesthetic and psychological interests underlying the innovative morphology of his works, the critical reception of his painting in the 1920s, and his participation in the creation of Bunuel's Surrealist films Un chien andalou (1929) and L'age d'or (1930).
