WILLEM DE KOONING: PAINTINGS. David Sylvester et al. National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., 1994. Organized in association with Tate Gallery, London, and Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. A major review of de Kooning's singular contributions to postwar American art, this catalogue features excellent full-page reproductions of 84 paintings executed by the renowned Dutch-born artist (b. 1904) from 1938 to 1986, including biomorphic and landscape-based abstractions dating from the 1940s and 50s and many highly expressive studies of the female figure as well as a selection of the artist's lyrical late works. Two essays discussing the formative influences on de Kooning's development and examining the stylistic, technical and thematic transitions central to his oeuvre preface a six-part chronological presentation of the exhibited paintings, each section prefaced by a substantial critical text.
