This scholarly catalogue celebrates the prominent role of Isabella d'Este (1474-1539) as a patron and collector in Renaissance Mantua through a presentation of 144 works drawn from international collections, among them portraits of Isabella and her family by Titian, Rubens and Leonardo, sculptures by Antico, numerous portrait medals, and paintings and drawings by Mantegna, Costa, Perugino, Correggio and other artists commissioned by Isabella. Complemented by many photographs of Isabella's palace, excellent reproductions and lengthy analyses of the featured works accompany some 20 texts that range from discussions of her personal character and artistic interests to detailed examinations of her renowned Studiolo and Grotta.
