MAN ON FIRE/EL HOMBRE EN LLAMAS: LUIS JIMENEZ. Albuquerque Museum, 1994. Distributed by University of New Mexico Press, Albuquerque. 200 pp. with 216 ills. (130 col.). 28 x 26 cm. LC 93-73295 ISBN 0826315518 In English; prefatory texts, four essays, and statements by the artist also in Spanish.
Accompanying the first major survey of the provocative oeuvre of prominent Mexican American sculptor Jimenez (b. 1940), this catalogue highlights more than 40 lustrous, garishly colored figurative works in fiber glass dating from 1968 to 1993 along with some 130 related drawings and prints, the selection encompassing interpretive portrayals of archetypal figures of the Southwest as well as many images addressing political and socio-sexual aspects of contemporary Chicano and Anglo culture. Commentaries by Jimenez on most of the featured pieces supplement four essays that examine the artist's distinctive thematic and formal concerns, including discussions of his cross-cultural views of life in the United States-Mexico border region and the varied influences of Pop art, Western regionalism and the Mexican muralist movement on his stylistic development.
