Extensively examining artistic representations of agrarian laborers in the context of the actual circumstances of life in European rural communities from the medieval period to the modern era, this catalogue thoroughly documents an exhibition of some 250 paintings, illuminated manuscripts, drawings, tapestries, prints and photographs from more than 50 museums, ranging from early calendar depictions of seasonal events and panoramic scenes of peasant festivals by Jan Brueghel the Elder to idealized views by Lancret and Boucher and realistic studies by Breton and Millet. Excellent reproductions and individual discussions of most of the featured works are accompanied by twelve essays describing the changing economic and social status of rural workers over the past 700 years and examining the variety of aesthetic and cultural values reflected in their depiction by artists over the centuries.
