Delineating the related aesthetic and mystical concerns reflected in the landscape imagery of artists active in New Mexico and British Columbia during the second quarter of the 20th century, this catalogue presents good reproductions of 67 paintings and some 25 watercolors, drawings and photographs by Marsden Hartley, Georgia O'Keeffe, Raymond Jonson, Emily Carr, F.H. Varley, Jock Macdonald, Lawren S. Harris and 14 other noted American and Canadian figures. Three substantial essays examine the aesthetic philosophies of the featured artists and analyze the transcendental values informing their portrayals of nature, discussing such influences as the poetry of Whitman, the theoretical writings of Kandinsky and the indigenous cultures of the two regions.
