Exploring the distinctive spiritual and psychological concerns of women in Flemish religious orders as reflected in the subjects and iconography of art works they commissioned or created, this catalogue documents an unusual exhibition composed of 265 paintings, reliquaries and diverse devotional objects from convents, churches and libraries, including numerous portraits of nuns and female saints and depictions of scenes from the life of Christ produced primarily during the 17th and 18th centuries. Color reproductions of the featured works (most of them by anonymous artists) are accompanied by a lengthy text examining a wide range of issues related to the history, organization and mystical objectives of religious communities of Flemish women since the 13th century as well as five essays discussing such topics as the character and role of reliquaries in convents and evaluating several 17th-century religious manuscripts written by women.
