ACHILLE-ETNA MICHALLON. Vincent Pomarede et al. Musee du Louvre, Paris, 1994. Dossiers du Departement des peintures et du Departement des arts graphiques, 43. Published by Reunion des musees nationaux, Paris. 192 pp. with 152 ills. (15 col.). 24 x 17 cm. ISBN 2711829405 In French.
This scholarly catalogue illuminates the role of Neo-Classicism in the evolution of landscape painting in France through an examination of the oeuvre of a successful early 19th-century academic artist, documenting some 100 paintings and drawings by Michallon (1796-1822) as well as a selection of representative compositions by Valenciennes, Robert and Cogniet. A biographical text, an analysis of Michallon's training as a draughtsman and a discussion of his critical fortunes are supplemented by essays that describe the status of historical landscape painting in early 19th-century France, assess works produced by Michallon during his sojourn in Rome, and evaluate his relationship to his student, Corot.
