LOUISE BOURGEOIS: THE LOCUS OF MEMORY -- WORKS, 1982-1993. Charlotta Kotik et al. Brooklyn Museum, 1994. Organized in association with Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C. Published in association with Harry N. Abrams, Inc., New York. 144 pp. with 86 ills. (29 col.). 32 x 24 cm. LC 93-28375 ISBN 0810931273 In English.
Illuminating the distinctive character of Bourgeois's oeuvre through an examination of her recent works, this well-illustrated catalogue showcases some 40 sculptures and installation pieces and eight mixed-media drawings by the celebrated French-born American sculptor (b. 1911), among them enigmatic carvings, castings and assemblages variously incorporating fragmented anatomical images, abstracted organic forms, architectonic elements and found objects. A series of commentaries on Bourgeois's work by eleven contemporary artists and critics augments three substantial essays that analyze the featured pieces in detail, discuss the concept of the "uncanny" and its central role in the sculptor's oeuvre, and investigate the autobiographical, existential and gender-related issues informing her artistic vision.
