Examining the stylistic and thematic diversity of Goya's oeuvre as reflected in his small-scale compositions, this catalogue presents fine color reproductions of 112 paintings and oil sketches spanning the long career of the renowned Spanish artist (1746-1828), the selection including religious and allegorical tableaux, portrait miniatures, genre studies and depictions of bullfights, asylums and scenes of crime and violence. A twelve-part presentation of the exhibited works featuring extensive commentaries on individual pieces and series is preceded by three scholarly essays discussing the vision of artistic freedom manifested in Goya's small-format paintings and investigating his complex dual role as a court painter and a chronicler of social catastrophes and human suffering.
