Accompanied by numerous photographs of archaeological sites, more than 40 essays trace the succession of Amorite, Assyrian, Persian, Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Muslim influences in Syria and discuss major cultural developments particularly as reflected in the histories of Ebla, Mari, Palmyra and other urban centers of the region.
