Highlighting Beuys's leading role in postwar German avant-garde art through an extensive chronicle of his participation in the five Documenta exhibitions mounted in Kassel from 1964 to 1982, this catalogue surveys the diverse drawings, objects, installations, and performance and conceptual pieces presented at the shows by the renowned German artist (1921-1986), featuring preparatory sketches, notes and photographs related to such innovative works as Buro fur direkte Demokratie (1972) and the large-scale environmental project 7000 Eichen (1982). Some 20 essays and four interviews with Beuys examine the creation and significance of the Documenta works in the context of the artist's intense engagement with social, political and aesthetic issues.
