Examining in detail the oeuvre of a Belgian artist who was on the threshold of an influential career in Paris at the time of his early death, this catalogue features excellent reproductions of paintings and works on paper reflecting Evenepoel's links to the Impressionists and Nabis while also presenting an illustrated catalogue raisonne of 341 paintings by the artist that includes portraits, studies of domestic subjects, depictions of Parisian street life and views of Algerian scenes. Three substantial essays providing a detailed biography of Evenepoel and discussing the significance of his work in the context of art trends of the period are complemented by five texts exploring such topics as the artist's interest in Orientalist themes and his activities as a printmaker and photographer.
