PETRUS CHRISTUS: RENAISSANCE MASTER OF BRUGES. Maryan W. Ainsworth and Maximiliaan P.J. Martens. Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, 1994. Distributed by Harry N. Abrams, Inc., New York. 244 pp. with 207 ills. (62 col.). 32 x 25 cm. LC 93-47600 ISBN 0810964821 In English.
Documenting the first major exhibition devoted to early Netherlandish painter Christus (ca. 14l0-1475/76), whose achievements have long been overshadowed by those of fellow Bruges artist Jan van Eyck, this catalogue features excellent full-page reproductions and lengthy individual analyses of 18 oils, four drawings and an illuminated manuscript page by the painter, the selection comprising more than two thirds of his known oeuvre. Three scholarly essays include a biographical text, a discussion of the political and cultural climate of the Burgundian Netherlands during the 15th century, and a well-illustrated investigation of Christus's stylistic development and working methods based largely on recent scientific analyses of the underdrawings of the exhibited paintings.
