Documenting an ambitious exhibition composed of some 380 objects drawn from more than 140 international collections, this scholarly catalogue traces the widespread political, cultural and artistic impact of the Normans in France, England, Italy and Sicily from the time of William the Conqueror to the French subjugation of Normandy in the early 13th century. Reproductions of the exhibited works (which include manuscripts, armor, architectural sculptures, gold and ceramic vessels, ivory carvings, coins, ecclesiastical objects, textiles and other artifacts) are accompanied by nearly 60 essays discussing the organization of social and economic life in the diverse Norman domains and examining the development of architecture, art and material culture in each of the regions.
