LA CHIMERE DE MONSIEUR DESPREZ. Musee du Louvre, Paris, 1994. Organized in association with and published by Reunion des musees nationaux, Paris. 248 pp. with 100 ills. (36 col.). 30 x 22 cm. ISBN 2711829359 In French.
Featuring an enigmatic etching of a monstrous three-headed chimera by Louis Jean Desprez (1743-1804) as the centerpiece of its survey of the French artist's unusual oeuvre, this catalogue presents a selection of 53 drawings, watercolors and prints that includes darkly imaginative theater designs and depictions of historical scenes produced by Desprez during his long tenure as a scenographer, architect and painter at the Swedish court of Gustavus III as well as views of architecture and ruins dating from his sojourn in Italy (1777-1784) and a series of studies for monumental tombs. Five essays discussing Desprez's multifaceted career are supplemented by 25 texts that analyze the aesthetic and psychological significance of individual images and motifs and examine the pervasive role of destruction, death and the fantastic as themes in the artist's work.
