GEORG FLEGEL, 1566-1638: STILLEBEN (Georg Flegel, 1566-1638: Still Lifes). Ed. by Kurt Wettengl. Schirn Kunsthalle, Frankfurt am Main, 1993. Organized in association with Historisches Museum, Frankfurt am Main. Published in association with Verlag Gerd Hatje, Stuttgart. 304 pp. with 267 ills. (106 col.). 30 x 25 cm. LC 94-185918 ISBN 3775704728 In German.
The first significant examination of Flegel's oeuvre and his pioneering role in early German still-life painting, this scholarly catalogue thoroughly documents 47 of the Frankfurt artist's naturalistic depictions of fruit, flowers, fish and poultry along with ten compositions he produced in collaboration with Lucas and Martin van Valckenborch, some 40 of his meticulous watercolor nature studies, and an array of nearly 70 related pieces by other painters of the period. Fine reproductions and lengthy analyses of the featured works are accompanied by eleven essays that include discussions of Flegel's career in the context of European still-life traditions of the time and the stylistic and thematic elements characteristic of his paintings as well as such topics as the art school established in Hanau by still-life painter Daniel Soreau and the influence of Netherlandish artists on the depiction of botanical and animal subjects during the late 16th century.
