GEORG RAPHAEL DONNER, 1693-1741. Osterreichische Galerie, Schloss Belvedere, Vienna, 1993. 686 pp. with 421 ills. (48 col.). 28 x 23 cm. In German.
Reappraising the oeuvre of the preeminent Austrian Baroque sculptor, this massive catalogue showcases 60 lead, marble and bronze works by Donner and his workshop, a series of prints after his compositions by Paul Troger, and more than 100 sculptures by Balthasar Friedrich Moll, Jacob Gabriel Mollinarolo and other contemporaries and followers of the artist. Extensive commentaries on the featured works (which range from major public sculptures to religious relief panels and mythological figurines) are prefaced by ten scholarly essays that examine Donner's career and his significance in the context of 18th-century Viennese sculpture while also discussing the impact of his work in Slovakia, his close links with Troger and other topics.
