Extensively surveying the celebrated oeuvre and controversial career of Italian artist Sironi, this catalogue documents an exhibition of more than 400 paintings, drawings, illustrations and architectural and scenographic designs dating from 1902 to 1960, featuring full-page reproductions and individual discussions of 137 paintings that include somber urban landscapes and nudes, studies for public murals, and tableaux celebrating Italian history and culture executed in a style based on Quattrocento models. Twelve essays discuss such topics as Sironi's early involvement with Futurism and Metaphysical art, his prominent position in the Novecento movement of the 1920s, the primitivist and monumental characteristics of his work, his role in nationalist exhibitions during the early 1930s, and his links to the Fascist regime of Mussolini.
