The first in a series of five catalogues planned to document the renowned painting collection of the Mauritshuis, this scholarly publication showcases a selection of 45 works on historical, biblical and mythological themes by Gossaert, Van der Weyden, Rembrandt, Rubens, Vermeer, Jordaens, Bloemaert and some 30 other major Dutch and Flemish artists of the 15th to the early 18th century while also providing an illustrated checklist of some 140 additional history paintings in the museum's holdings. Prefaced by an essay tracing the development of history painting in the Low Countries, full-page reproductions and detail views of the featured paintings are accompanied by lengthy commentaries and illustrations of numerous related works.
