THE FLOATING WORLD REVISITED. Donald Jenkins et al. Portland Art Museum, 1993. Published in association with University of Hawaii Press, Honolulu. 268 pp. with 150 ills. (38 col.). 30 x 25 cm. LC 93-38081 ISBN 0824816145 In English.
An in-depth examination of the historical and cultural context of the "golden age" of ukiyo-e in late 18th-century Japan, this catalogue presents reproductions and often lengthy individual discussions of some 125 prints, paintings, illustrated books and decorative objects selected from international collections, including depictions of scenes of daily life and portrayals of courtesans and kabuki actors by Utamaro, Eishi, Harunobu, Kiyonaga and many other artists. Five essays discussing the relationship of the flowering of ukiyo-e to social and political developments in Japan during the 1780s and 90s and to trends in literature and the theater precede a five-part thematic presentation of the exhibited works, each section accompanied by an introductory text.
