A detailed examination of artistic developments in Naples during the reign of the Austrian Hapsburgs, this scholarly catalogue showcases 41 paintings and 22 drawings by Francesco Solimena (1657-1747), the dominant Neapolitan artist of the era, along with more than 80 works by Luca Giordano, Paolo de Matteis, Giacomo del Po, Francesco de Mura and other painters and a diverse selection of decorative objects. Excellent reproductions and individual analyses of the featured works are augmented by ten essays outlining the history of Austria's brief dominion over the region and discussing cultural and artistic conflicts and interconnections between Vienna and Naples during the period.
