A significant examination of the achievements of renowned German painter Lochner (ca. 1400-1451) in the context of 15th-century Northern European artistic traditions, this substantial catalogue thoroughly documents an ambitious exhibition featuring ten panel paintings, two illuminated manuscripts and several drawings attributed to the Cologne master along with some 100 works by German and Netherlandish precursors and contemporaries of the artist, among them Jan van Eyck, Petrus Christus and Rogier van der Weyden. Fine color reproductions and detailed analyses of the exhibited pieces are preceded by 24 scholarly essays discussing individual works by Lochner and exploring thematic, stylistic and technical aspects of the artist's oeuvre.
