OP DEMON OF PAINTING: THE ART OF KAWANABE KYOSAI. Timothy Clark. British Museum, London, 1993. Organized in association with Kawanabe Kyosai Memorial Museum, Warabi, and Asahi Shimbun, Tokyo. 192 pp. with 296 ills. (129 col., 2 foldout). 28 x 22 cm. ISBN 0714114626 In English.
Extensively surveys the distinctive oeuvre of Japanese artist Kyosai (1831-1889) through a presentation of 112 paintings, drawings, prints and books assembled from Japanese and European collections, including depictions of Buddhist deities, characters from myth and legend, theater scenes, beautiful women and other traditional subjects as well as many of the artist's "crazy pictures," in which he satirized both the feudal system of the Shogunate and the Westernization of politics and culture promoted by the succeeding Meiji regime. A detailed account of Kyosai's life and career is followed by fine color reproductions and individual discussions of the exhibited works and an illustrated checklist of some 100 paintings by the artist in the holdings of the British Museum.
