ANTONY GORMLEY. Tate Gallery, Liverpool, 1993. Organized in association with Malmo Konsthall and Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin. 120 pp. with 87 ills. (49 col.). 32 x 25 cm. ISBN 1854371282 In English.
Showcases a diverse array of sculptures produced from 1987 to 1993 by noted British artist Gormley (b. 1950), presenting some 30 works in metal, concrete or clay linked by their overt or indirect allusions to the human form, among them faceless lead-encased figures modeled on the artist's body, an installation composed of thousands of hand-formed terra-cotta figurines, and large-scale organic pieces representing abstractions of human poses. Supplemented by a lengthy interview with the artist and illustrated with many additional works, two critical essays review the progression of Gormley's distinctive oeuvre and examine his exploration of figuration in the context of contemporary trends in sculpture.
