A well-illustrated survey of the achievements of renowned British photographer Brandt (1904-1983), this catalogue features some 175 images reflecting all aspects of the artist's oeuvre from the late 1920s to the early 1960s, including many documentary studies of working-class life and domestic wartime scenes in England as well as stark landscapes and a selection of unconventional nudes and portraits. A six-part thematic presentation of the exhibited photographs is prefaced by a critical essay discussing Brandt's career and the subtle intermingling of realist, romantic and surrealist elements that characterizes his work.
