This scholarly catalogue presents some 150 studies of Roman antiquities and of zoological and botanical subjects selected from the vast collection of works on paper assembled by Italian patron Cassiano (1588-1657) as an encyclopedic archive intended to document all aspects of human creativity and the natural world. Illustrations and individual discussions of drawings by Pietro Testa, Pietro da Cortona, Bernardino Capitelli and other artists commissioned by Cassiano (many of the works now in the holdings of the Royal Library at Windsor and the British Museum) are accompanied by seven essays reviewing the collector's career and exploring the history and significance of his ambitious project.
