Thoroughly documenting a selection of 53 paintings and 35 drawings by Longhi (1701-1785) along with 14 prints after his works, this catalogue presents a scholarly review of the oeuvre of an Italian painter who achieved renown primarily for his genre depictions of scenes of daily life among the Venetian aristocracy and lower classes. Full-page reproductions of the paintings and detailed commentaries on all the exhibited pieces are accompanied by eight essays that include assessments of Longhi's distinctive style in the context of 18th-century painting in Venice and discussions of his critical fortunes, his late career, and the character of Venetian society as portrayed in his works.
